Tharaka University has etched its name in Kenya’s legal education history following the official launch of its School of Law, becoming the 21st accredited law school in the country.
The colorful ceremony brought together distinguished members of the legal fraternity, university leadership, students, and other stakeholders to celebrate a milestone that expands access to legal education and opportunities in the region.
The event featured captivating student performances, recognition of outstanding mooting achievements, and inspiring addresses from legal and academic leaders who hailed the School of Law as a transformative addition to the University’s academic portfolio.

Chief Guest, Hon. Justice Joseph Kipchumba Katwa Kigen, SC, Judge of the Court of Appeal, has congratulated Tharaka University on the launch of its School of Law, describing it as a significant milestone in the institution’s academic growth and contribution to legal education in Kenya.
Hon. Justice Katwa Kigen challenged the School of Law to position itself as a leading centre for intellectual discourse on emerging social, legal, and scientific issues.
He expressed confidence that the faculty has the capacity to nurture and drive meaningful conversations of both national and international significance.
He commended students for their confidence, ambition, and determination, noting that these qualities were evident in both law students and student leaders who made presentations during the launch.
He further encouraged the university to take a proactive role in addressing pressing societal concerns, including religious exploitation and manipulation, and to advance legal discourse on how the justice system can better protect vulnerable members of society while upholding justice and fundamental rights.
Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President, Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama has congratulated Tharaka University on the launch of its School of Law, describing it as a major milestone.
In his address, he noted that while every law school has a unique identity, Tharaka University’s defining character is resilience.
He urged students to uphold the values of justice and resilience, make a positive impact, and contribute to the country’s growing need for competent legal professionals.
He also noted that establishing a law school in an ASAL region helps expand access to legal education and opportunities.
The president was accompanied by a number of Law Society of Kenya (LSK) Council members, who joined in celebrating the milestone and commending the university for its commitment to advancing legal training and professional excellence in Kenya.
Tharaka University Chancellor, Prof. Emeritus Ratemo Michieka while addressing participants during the ongoing launch of the School of Law has encouraged students to pursue law as a calling to serve society rather than just a career, urging them to be voices of reason in public discourse and to engage in understanding the country’s economic transformation.
The chancellor has lauded the university for demonstrating excellence, saying that such progress is only possible when supported by strong commitment and purpose.
He has further urged students to identify a niche that speaks to their hearts and one that can create meaningful change, stressing that the university’s core goal is to produce legal professionals who will protect and uphold the law while maintaining integrity and safeguarding the institution’s reputation.
Prof. Michieka thanked invited guests for honoring the occasion and highlighting the importance of resilience, especially in institutions growing within ASAL regions
